Empowering Aging in the Right Place
in Rural Nova Scotia
Homeward Bound is a research initiative aimed at supporting aging rural Nova Scotians (ARNS) to age how they decide is right for them. By 2030, a quarter of all Nova Scotians will be 65 or older, which requires a reimagining of healthcare, housing, and social support systems across our rural landscapes.
Guided by community-based participatory research (CBPR) and grounded in values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, our team is working with aging rural Nova Scotians to envision what they need to age in the right place (AIRP). Together, we will build and deliver community actions and care practices that support aging rural Nova Scotians’ wellbeing.
Our work centers on Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) in the Eastern Health Zone – areas where high concentrations of older adults live – creating aging supports that respond to community needs and experiences.
Strengthen Social Support
Community Navigators and social supports to connect older adults with community services and reduce loneliness.
Empower Aging in Place
Enable older adults to remain in their homes and communities if they choose.
ENHANCE RURAL HEALTHCARE ACCESS
